Nastia Liukin talks Barre Pilates

Olympic Gymnast Nastia Liukin, who was awarded five medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, including the lauded all-round title prior to her retirement from competitive gymnastics in 2012, recently took time out to speak to the Cut about her life and her fitness regime.

The gymnast, who has just recently graduated with a degree in sports management from New York University, is set to be a commentator at the upcoming Rio Olympics taking place this August.

She is also going to be one of the many gymnasts to take part in the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastic Champions, which will take in 40 towns.

Speaking about her daily regime, Nastia revealed that she wakes up between 5 and 5.30 each morning, eats a small snack, such as a piece of fruit, and immediately starts working out, at least four days a week.

Liukin also spoke about the freedom she now has to choose exercise she enjoys, where she previously had to spend all her time and energy on gymnastics. One of her favourite exercises now that she has more freedom, she says is barre Pilates which is a combination of ballet style movements and traditional Pilates classes in Pilates classes pilates classes Pilates classes. She said that Pilates was so good because ‘it elongates you’

The gymnast also expressed a love for hot yoga, but admitted that sometimes she will do nothing more than go for a 20-minute jog, stressing the importance of taking in cardio exercises, especially when the weather is good.
