Pilates helped La La Land dance to success

The stars of the Oscar-winning movie, La La Land, used Pilates to get themselves in shape for the film’s high-energy dance scenes.

When La La Land was nominated for 12 Oscars, nobody was surprised. The clever storyline and great songs engaged audiences of all ages.

However, the high-energy dance scenes were what caught most people’s attention, with the traffic jam jazz scene, one with a fast, rhythmic beat and numerous high jump moves, being just one example.

To be able to perform these high-intensity dances, all of the actors had to be flexible as well as super fit. One of the film’s choreographers, Mandy Moore, highlighted this need when she said:

“I knew they had to get to a place physically where they could do these nice long takes, time after time, and not only get one take and they would be so tired that they couldn’t dance,”

For many years, lead actress Emma Stone has used Pilates as part of her fitness routine. As far back as 2011, she was working with the famous LA Pilates instructor Mari Windsor to hone her figure. Therefore, it is not surprising that she used Pilates to help her to prepare for her Oscar-winning role in La La Land.

The lead actor, Ryan Gosling, also worked out using a Pilates table. His regular trainer, Arin Babaian, recommended that he do so to improve his posture. He also needed to build up the strength and stability of his spine, so that he could lift his co-star effortlessly above his head when they recreated the iconic ‘Dirty Dancing’ lift.
