Ward gets fighting fit with Pilates

Boxing legend and current WBA super middleweight belt holder, Andre Ward has revealed the secret to his continuing high levels of fitness.

Ward is said to be one of the fittest boxers around and recently he shared a few points about his exercise regime with a reporter from Men’s Fitness. The fighter, who is currently undefeated, revealed that his secret weapon for fitness in the ring is Pilates.

Most people think of Pilates as being a women’s exercise, but there are actually a lot of men who also practice the stretching sequences invented by Joseph Pilates.

Speaking about his Pilates regime, Ward told men’s Fitness:

“Pilates is phenomenal. I go so hard in the boxing training and the strength and conditioning training and the track work, but [Pilates] keeps me supple. It keeps me injury-free but it also keeps me strong.”

Ward has been practicing Pilates for 12 years now, incorporating it into his training even before he hit the boxing big time by winning the Olympic gold medal. Pilates has served him well because it helps to build flexibility and a stable core, whilst improving muscle strength.

Ward added:

“A lot of times in American [sic] we work on bully muscles. We want the big muscles and the stuff that looks good. But we don’t focus on the little things. But that’s the stuff that sustains you and keeps you strong.”
